Using Software Update is faster and easier than upgrading by other methods, and it might require less storage space to download and install the upgrade. Software Update shows only upgrades that are compatible with your Mac.
If the macOS that you want isn't compatible with your Mac or the currently installed macOS, the installer will let you know, and the App Store might prevent you from downloading it. For example, it might dim the Get button, say that the macOS is not compatible with this device, or say that the requested version of macOS is not available.

You may also encounter issues if you are trying to download an older version of macOS that your Mac cannot support. Usually when Apple introduces a new Mac it will not be able to run the version of macOS that shipped before the one installed on that Mac. The older macOS might not support certain components in that Mac, for example.
If the old version of the OS you are after predates Snow Leopard and you have a developer account you might be able to get it from developer.apple.com/downloads. If you search within the OS X category you should see downloads for all versions of OS X, at least from version 10.3 to 10.6.
The current release of Xcode is available as a free download from the Mac App Store. The Mac App Store will notify you when an update is available or you can have macOS update automatically as it becomes available.
The latest beta version and previous versions of Xcode can be downloaded from the Downloads page. To download Xcode, simply sign in with your Apple ID. Apple Developer Program membership is not required.
macOS Catalina introduces a new way to download and install macOS updates. In the past, macOS updates were downloaded and installed using the App Store application. With macOS Catalina, Apple has introduced a new method of updating macOS - macOS Catalina Installer files. These macOS Catalina Installer files are available in two formats: macOS Catalina ISO and macOS Catalina DMG.
In conclusion, downloading and installing macOS Catalina is a reasonably straightforward process. First, head to the App Store and download the installer. Once the download is complete, open the installer and follow the prompts to begin the installation process. Read any instructions carefully and follow all steps to avoid any issues. After the installation, you'll be able to enjoy all of the new features and improvements that macOS Catalina has to offer.
During my testing in the Catalina beta version I was able to download 10.15, 10.14.6, 10.14.5, and 10.13.6. I was not able to test if 10.13.6 would download the hardware specific build of 10.13.6 for the 2018 MacBook Pro, since I do not have that hardware.
I would assume that downloading an Installer application for a macOS version that is not supported on the hardware you are running the command on would fail. (Again I did not have such hardware available for testing.)

Thanks for replying to this thread - it looks like the link you've posted is a link to this thread though. Is there a page we can go to to download a personal-use version of fusion that's compatible with Catalina as that's something I also need?
This message (or a variant) will sometimes show up just after you start the installation process, and is most often caused by a corrupt installer file. The simple solution is to delete the macOS Catalina installer and download a new copy.
Tring to upgrade from MoJave to Catalina and it tells me I must install catalina before installing catalina. Trying to install 10.15.7 from 10.14.6. ultimate goal is to get to BigSur. This is on a 2017 Mac Mini.
Hi I am trying to download the MacOS Catalina on a MacBookAir early 2014 Yosemite 10.10.5 and when I click continue to install it a caution sign pops up at the top of my screen saying Downloading installer information to the target volume failed.Any help please. Stay safe
In this case, the corrupt disk image is referring to the download of the mac OS Catalina installer which contains a disk image within it. While not common, it is not unusual that during a download of a large file such as the Catalina installer one or more files can become corrupt.
New update, has been downloaded and says needs to restart, when select restart it closes down and then the install black screen with white logo and loading bar comes up and gets to about 5%, then goes blank before coming back on again then starting up as if from the power off, and once on shows no update has been installed, the software update page says needs to restart to install, been through the same process about 10 times
Hello Tom, I tried to repair the macOS Catalina start up disk using disk utility. But when first time the first aid option failed then again run the first aid. Disk utility showed the overlapped extent allocation error. But I could not replace the damaged file. I did not have the backup, and I was to regain my system. I found some software for disk recovery like Stellar Data Recovery for Mac, DiskDrill Data Recovery and Pandora. I downloaded free version of stellar and disk drill. Luck by chance I recovered in first attempt by stellar.
I just played with my Mouse and it seems the battery was not making contact and that part is now working. I will continue with my catalina install and see if the rest is working OK. Thanks for the trouble. Ed
Upgrading from 10.15 to 10.15.1 failed on my 2012 Mac mini. I solved this by downloading the complete 10.15.1 installer, and install it on an external disk (just to be safe). This install finished properly but running 10.15.1 on an external disk triggers the XprotectService running wild problem (reported elsewhere) that consumes most CPU resources and makes my mini very very slow. Repeatedly killing the XprotectService process makes it possibnle to get some basic things done nut not much more. I managed to migrate my data from the internal disk to the USB disk (took very very long due to the XprotectService problem), and then managed to install 10.15.1 competely on the internal disk using the installer. Running from the internal disk does not trigger the XProtectService problem, so I have been happy but waiting for 10.15.2 to fix this issue.
My problem has been trying to download Catalina. I have a 75 mbps line. It starts downloading at full speed (6-8 MBps) but after the first gigabyte of the 8.09 GB size, it starts slow down to 100 kbps or less, eventually timing out after 12 hours or more.
Broke the dual displays on my Late 2012 Mac Mini. The Thunderbolt-to-VGA adapter works. The USB-to-VGA is detected but the display is blank. Apple support has no clue. Rolled back to Mojave and everything is OK. Apple support is calling back next week after I restore Catalina from a Time Machine backup so they can download the logs for review.
If the installer is failing that fast after you select a target drive, I would try deleting the installer and downloading a new copy. There have been reports of corrupt installers and that is one of the symptoms.
I have macbook air 2018. I update mac os Catalina, unfortunately internet cut and download stop. Again updating os , it was start firstly. Also mac system space increase. This process near five times happen. Please help me.
Use Disk Utility to check that your drive(s) are in good shape, you can find a link to check your drives in that article above. Make sure all other apps are closed and you may want to delete the Catalina installer and downloaded a new copy.
Catalina will not install on MacPro 2013 using an OWC Aura 1TB SSD drive. After OS downloads, a window appears telling me that no Apple approved drive is available. All my drives show in a window, but none were manufactured by Apple, Any solutions?
Had the same problem on my MBP. It was during the Beta Catalina OS load. Try Utilities > HD first aid at the start up. See if that fixes it. I tried everything I could find online. No luck. I then went to the genius bar at apple and had them check it out. The SSD had become unmounted. They ran diagnostic and all was good. Reloaded Mojave back on it. Back normal. took about 1 hr. Currently I am getting the unable to complete install. Corrupt installer. download and retry. Error message. Tried a couple of times but still hangs up. Disappointed in the this update. Not sure what is happening at apple. Maybe they hired people from Microsoft. I will wait a while maybe they will get the bugs out.
The installer on Mac works very differently than Windows, and it sometimes seems you get a temporary install. Could you try the steps in the following article and see whether they work: How to download and install Firefox on Mac.
The easiest way to install MacPorts on a Mac is by downloading the pkg or dmg for Ventura, Monterey, Big Sur, Catalina, Mojave, High Sierra, Sierra, El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks, Mountain Lion, Lion, Snow Leopard, Leopard or Tiger and running the system's Installer by double-clicking on the pkg contained therein, following the on-screen instructions until completion.
If on the other hand you decide to install MacPorts from source, there are still a couple of things you will need to do after downloading the tarball before you can start installing ports, namely compiling and installing MacPorts itself:
CCC 6 is the latest version available. Users running Catalina (10.15), Big Sur (11.*), Monterey (12.*), or Ventura (13.*) should use this version of CCC. If you are having trouble downloading CCC from the link above, try this alternate download location. 2ff7e9595c
